South Brent Old School Community Centre is an open access Community Hub in the heart of South Brent, on the edge of Dartmoor. The Centre is a vibrant base for care, culture, arts and community services, and home to numerous local groups, facilities, businesses and charities, with a number of rooms available for hire. South Brent Old School Community Centre is the ideal venue for your next meeting, talk, party, workshop, conference, exhibition or fundraising event.
NEWS FOR SUMMER 2026!
The Old School Community Centre has long been in need of a new roof. We are pleased to say that we have now arranged for the roof to be replaced this summer! The whole building will have its 150-year-old roof repaired, with new battens, felt and slates (whilst keeping as many of the original slates as we can). We will add insulation and solar panels. Inside, the north end of the building will get new windows and new, lowered ceilings. This will improve our energy efficiency, and pave the way for further improvements in the future.
Whilst this is good news, there will be some significant disruption on the Old School site while the work is carried out.
The Old School Community Centre will be closed to the public from 22nd June to 1st November inclusive.
This means we will not be able to take any new bookings within this period.
We value all our regular groups and Centre users and we are making every effort to minimise the inconvenience caused by the building closure. We are pleased to say that many of our regular groups, activities and facilities will continue, temporarily relocating to other venues around the village.
The Post Office and South Brent & District Caring will remain on the Old School site in temporary accommodation during the building works. For the duration of the build period, the car park will be closed.
We very much appreciate your support and understanding as we undertake these essential works.

The Old School building has been at the heart of the Community for nearly 150 years, and we need your help to keep it warm, dry and welcoming. The roof replacement this summer is just the start. We need to raise £2,200,000 to complete our programme of rejuvenation. We’ve already raised over £500,000, but to unlock the full benefits we need your help to realise our ultimate goals.

Art House
An arts and crafts space for making, mending and meeting. Art House has an ongoing programme of courses, classes and sessions suitable for all.
Archive
The SOUTH BRENT ARCHIVE is housed in the Beacon Room, and holds a series of talks and events throughout the year.
Community Fridge
Saving food from going to landfill, free to everyone in the community to collect
Share Shed
The Share Shed will be in the car park every Friday morning between 10:00 and 12:00.
Corridor Gallery
An ongoing exhibition of artwork from the local community and displays of the work of local organisations. Artwork can include paintings and drawings in various mediums, photographs and a wide variety of crafts.
Bike Bank
Aims to provide free, week-long leases to encourage people in South Brent to get out and about around the area.
South Brent &
District Caring
Offering befriending and other services including prescription collection, transport, help with forms and administration, assistance with shopping and gardening in South Brent and the surrounding areas of Avonwick, North Huish, Diptford and Rattery Parishes.
Sustainable South Brent
SSB has a base in the Old School Community Centre, in “the Hub”. As well as a drop-in three times a week, many SSB events are run in the building.
Equipment Available
We have a range of equipment available for use within the Centre, some items available for use outside the Community Centre in the local area.
Office or Studio
Space to Rent
We have six small rooms in the School House which can be used as an office or studio. When spaces become vacant they will be advertised widely in South Brent and beyond.
